More offensive wasted opportunities. Another loss. A sweep at the hands of the Astros. A 1-5 road trip. Mets could be three games out of first by the end of tonight.
What else is there to say?

Not good news: John Maine to DL, Billy Wagner injured
Doom and gloom from Adam Rubin:
The Mets need a run of a few wins here before things get worse.
Rubin also notes that Eddie Kunz could close today if needed.
John Maine is going to the DL. Jerry Manuel said he didn’t have a setback, but could use more time. The Mets needed an extra bullpen arm anyway because Billy Wagner is injured and unavailable. Wagner has a stiff forearm and will be examined in New York.Looks like the wheels are coming off this season in a hurry. Injuries are starting to pile up and the offense has started to look flat.

Movin' on up: Eddie Kunz called up to the bigs
The youth movement continues.
Binghamton closer Eddie Kunz was promoted to the Mets. Kunz is 1-4 with a 2.79 ERA, tallying 27 saves for the B-Mets.
I called it. Well, so did a lot of people. Will update when we know who is getting demoted or heading to the DL to make room.
Update: John Maine is heading the DL. Kunz will take his spot.

The Mets need to call up Eddie Kunz
If the Mets were unsure whether or not to call up AA pitching prospect Eddie Kunz before last night's game, they must know what they have to do now.
Short of the bullpen staff making a sign that read "Omar, promote Kunz now! (Hi Mom!)," they could not send a clearer sign to the front office that they need help. They need reinforcements, and they need them now.
I think it's time for the Mets to wise up and send Duaner Sanchez to the DL. His velocity seems to be dropping with every appearance. The newest Met, Daniel Murphy, saved his butt with a beautiful jumping grab at the wall and eventual double play, or the game might not have gotten to Billy Wagner (not that it mattered, because Wagner blew the save anyway).
Sanchez, who spent a year and a half out of baseball rehabbing his injured shoulder, seems to have hit a wall. It makes sense, as he hasn't thrown this much in two years and his stamina just isn't there. It works on the same reasoning that the Mets don't want Mike Pelfrey to top 180 innings.
Pelfrey's arm is young and fresh, but it's not used to throwing this much. Same thing with Sanchez. The promotion of Kunz would give Sanchez precious time off to both rest his arm and strengthen it.
Both games in Houston have seen a bullpen implosion, costing the Mets the game. A move needs to be made, and promoting internally is the only way to do it. The bullpen market is slim and the player would have to pass through waivers as it is.
Promote Kunz now.

TSTDIA: Astros 5 -- Mets 4
All you need to know is that Johan Santana pitched great and the bullpen absolutely imploded again.
I really feel bad for Johan. This must be his 243904809 no decision this season (a rough estimate).
And the Mets move back to third place.

Daniel Murphy's first game
Let's see how Daniel Murphy fares in his first major league game. It seemed to work for Nick Evans.
First AB: Singles through the hole between first and second. A seeing eye single. Murphy isn't on the basepath long, as Damion Easley rockets a two run home run to deep left field. 2-0 Mets.
Second AB: A 10-pitch AB results is a backwards K for Murphy. The 1.000 batting average is no more. It now stands at a measly .500.
Third AB: Murphy likes to make pitchers work. After an 8 pitch AB, Murphy grounds out to third base.
Murphy just made an absolutely gorgeous play in left field in the bottom of the seventh inning. He had to go back to the big wall in left field, jumped against the wall, and made a gorgeous catch. He then had the presence of mind to throw a beauty into second base to double off the runner, end the threat, and get out of the inning. Wow.
Fourth AB: Ground out to third again. 1-4 on the day.

You can call me "Daniel"
According to Keith Hernandez, the newest Met, Daniel Murphy, perfers the longer name over his nickname.
It's Daniel over Dan, for future reference.

Fernando Tatis shifted to regular right fielder
This is an interesting move by Jerry Manuel.
According to Bart Hubbuch in the New York Post, Fernando Tatis will now be the Mets starting right fielder. Manuel will use the tandem of rookies Nick Evans and Daniel Murphy as the left fielders.
Endy Chavez has been delegated the fourth outfielder.
The youth infusion is coming to the Mets!
I'm really excited to see how Murphy handles the bigs. He's supposedly the Mets best organizational hitter, so it'll be interesting to see how he adjusts to the major leagues. Maybe he can duplicate the first day Evans had in Colorado.

Lineup shakeup
The Mets are sporting a new look lineup heading into the second game against the Astros. Here's how it looks:
SS Jose Reyes
CF Carlos Beltran
3B David Wright
1B Carlos Delgado
RF Fernando Tatis
LF Dan Murphy
2B Damion Easley
C Ramon Castro
LHP Johan Santanta
The things to note are Beltran batting second and Murphy making his first major league start.
I like Beltran moving up in the order. He's been struggling lately, but he might see some better pitched back be Wright. Tatis behind Delgado is solid. Seems like Brian Schneider is losing his starting job.

Movin' on up: Daniel Murphy is going to the show
With the Mets finally putting Marlon Anderson on the DL (about two months too late), the Mets will call up the best hitter in the minor leagues, Daniel Murphy.
Murphy had just been moved to AAA, where he played only one game.
I'm looking for Murphy to get the call tonight. I'd love to see this kid get to shine on the big stage at such a young age.
